As we wait for November to see what projects the federal government is going to promote, and as politicians continue to peddle a gas pipeline and an LNG terminal for the province, the opposition to the proposed Centre Village gas/diesel fueled electricity generator continues to grow beyond the Chignecto Isthmus.

There are good reasons why New Brunswickers from across the entire province should reject this project.

Fact Sheets

These reasons that opposition to the plant has grown have been summarized in a Fact Sheet compiled by a number of respected groups–including Conservation Council of NB (CCNB), Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), NBLung, Sierra Club, Maritimers Against Climate Change and NBASGA–across the province and produced by the Conservation Council.

The sheet, (which makes a great handout) also contains links to petitions and a Facebook group formed by the local opposition.

Opposition and Press Coverage

The “Protect the Chignecto Isthmus Coalition” (PCIC) has a website where you can follow their news, such as their recent meeting with Premier Holt.

There are financial, environmental, public health, and climate change problems with this project that extend beyond its physical location.  Its approval process is also suspect. The public has been misled about the length of the comment period, Indigenous support for the project, and recently experts have questioned the accuracy of ProEnergy’s (the proponent) figures concerning the potential amount of its greenhouse gas emissions.

The Coalition has also received coverage on CBC, the Warktimes.com and nbmediacoop.org.

Peaceful Protest

Now the Coalition invites citizens from across the province to gather in a peaceful protest, to demand accountability and to ensure the Chignecto Isthmus, Tantramar wetlands, and surrounding areas remain protected!  This is about saying NO to the Tantramar Gas Plant!  A good turnout would be a real morale booster to this hard working Coalition.

Information Session

Ralph Torrie:  A Renewable Energy Future for Maritime Canada.
When:  Thursday, October 23 at 6 PM
Where: Fredericton Public Library, 12 Carleton Street

There are many big picture issues related to the gas plant project, and one of the biggest is what the future of New Brunswick’s energy system should be.  To that point, the CEDAR project and partners invited Ralph Torrie to Fredericton to share his analysis with the public of, A Renewable Energy Future for Maritime Canada.  Ralph is an international energy expert, and Research Director of Corporate Knights.

You can see more about Ralph, this event, and its sponsors at:

Two different and important events in one week.  Hope you can make one or both.
